estate at death was worth about £100,000), he held offices in the Levant Company
and the Royal Africa Company. Sir John, whom Pepys described as 'a pretty, civil,
understanding merchant' and his wife, Anne, as 'my fat brown beauty, a very noble
woman', lived in the parish of St Olave, Hart Street..."
